Weird interaction with Rocky’s Auto.

Hey Denver. I was hoping to try to get some opinions, because I’m at a loss.

So a some friends of mine went to Rocky’s Auto to buy a car. As they tell me, after some negotiation they reach a deal on an older car. They were told that financing them was slightly difficult, but they eventually found a bank willing to do it. They sign all the paperwork, leave the down payment, and drive the car away.

The next day, Rocky’s calls them back and tells them that there was some sort of mistake with the financing, and that the bank backed out. They told my friends that they needed to bring the car back, along with all of the original paperwork they signed, as it was a no good deal. My friends told me that, after making copies of everything, they took the car and the paperwork back. However, apparently the folks at Rocky’s are refusing to give them back the down payment without the original receipt. Not a copy, they want to original, signed receipt. When asked what happened, apparently the finance manager was exceptionally rude, and refused to tell them what had happened, and flat out refused to answer any questions, essentially said “here’s how this is gonna go” and made the demands. They are also refusing to give my friends any sort of written notice that the car had been returned.

Any ideas what the fuck happened? Is this legal? I mean, shit’s signed and my friends had the car. It was technically theirs, right? They had no obligation to take it back, and they don’t have to provide any of the paperwork, right? Any suggested recourse from reddit?
